Because buying hair online can require a bit of hand-holding, we enlisted celebrity hairstylist Gabrielle Corney (who recently slayed the ladies of En Vogue for a press shoot in Berlin using some of the same pieces we’re about to show you) to give us some hair-buying pro tips.
First off, the more textured the hair, the better you’ll be able to pull it off. Inexpensive synthetic curly, kinky, and coily wigs and extensions can actually look extremely realistic — sometimes more than some human hairstyles. You should also be willing to do some manipulation to make the hair look like it could be growing out of your scalp. Corney tells us to be prepared to cut it to fit your face shape, tweeze the part, brush it out and/or tease it to give it a lived-in, more authentic look. If you want to take the plunge and buy a lace wig online, Corney says to be prepared to roll up your sleeves. You may want to binge watch some YouTube videos on how to cut the lace and color it so that it mimics the color of your scalp. Does your new online hair purchase look more doll-like shiny than you anticipated? Corney suggests spraying dry shampoo on a brush and combing it through the hair. Another great tip even when you don’t spend a grip: you can prolong your hair’s life by investing in a styrofoam wig head and wig pins (shouldn’t cost more than about $6 total). Oh, and make sure you take your hair off before bed.
